Welcome to The Buttonwood Inn on Mt Surprise
Donna-Marie and Doug decided to change their everyday hectic “city life” routines and opted to live life pure and simple in the White Mountain Valley in New Hampshire. After spending over 25 years respectively in educational leadership and transportation management dreaming of living a simpler life and sharing it with others became a reality when they bought the Buttonwood Inn on Mt Surprise. The Buttonwood Inn on Mt Surprise, a beautiful and charming 1800’s country farmhouse sitting at the base of Mount Surprise was a perfect fit. Their passion to live sustainably and environmentally friendly while sharing their zeal for a greener natural existence was a major reason to embark on this endeavor. Farm to table foods, pure well water, artisan clean baking, fresh eggs and vegetables from local farms are a small sampling of their clean and greener daily offerings.
The fresh mountain air beckons all to get outdoors and enjoy all that Mother Nature has to offer no matter what the season. We welcome you to share our homestead and its unique experiences both inside the inn as well as its outdoor surroundings. The Buttonwood Inn on Mt Surprise sits on 5.5 acres of secluded forested land at the base of Mount Surprise and Bartlett Mountain. Watch the wildlife from our windows or explore the many hiking trails right outside our back door! Swim in our seasonal pool or soak the days excursions away while viewing the stars in our outdoor hot tub. End the cooler days of “leaf peeping” on the Kancamagus Highway by relaxing in front of our multiple wood-burning fireplaces. Or maybe after a day of skiing at Mount Attitash or Cranmore get cozy and unwind within your room.
The Inn offers 10 individually decorated guest rooms all with heating and cooling. The history and story of these lands and highlands are an important part of the town’s heritage. The nine remaining countryside rooms have a range of amenities such as: ensuite bathrooms, fireplaces, adjoining rooms, multiple beds, period furniture, hand painted country murals, and lovely views.
All lodging includes a gourmet hearty breakfast with items prepared to suit dietary restrictions (gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, flexitarian) upon request. Late afternoon artisan refreshments, both savory and sweet, are offered each day while unwinding from the day’s activities. All served in our spacious and comfortable dining room.
The Inn also boasts two large social areas. The main floor’s large French Country Parlor offers guests the ability to sink into a cozy chair in front of a wood-burning fireplace with a good book or engage in an intriguing game of Scrabble at one of the many gaming tables. Intricate puzzles, board games, and books are also available. The lower-level country-themed Gaming Room offers a large-screen TV and bar. The large wood-burning fireplace adds to the country appeal of this room as one can either enjoy a rousing game of Trivial Pursuit or backgammon.
