If you want to know where you are and where you’re going, this map and compass course can help you with wilderness navigation.
Learn and understand your magnetic baseplate compass, your topographic maps, and learn how to put the two together. Topics also covered include navigating above treeline, triangulation, identifying mountains in your view, and more. Empower yourself with this knowledge and feel at home anywhere in the Whites, even between the red lines on your map.

GEAR: Dress to be outside both for a bit in the morning as well as all afternoon. Since you will be in the woods, you may want long sleeves, pants, and certainly proper footwear (sneakers or boots). Bring note taking materials for the indoor session. Maps are provided but your are welcome to bring your own as well. Compasses and safety glasses may be rented for $5 for the day, otherwise bring your own. Brand new SUUNTO A-10 and A-30 compasses may also be purchased at the class at a discount ($20 and $25, respectively). These can also be ordered ahead of time (the order form in on the Wilderness Navigation page, linked below).

|9:30 - 1:00 pm||Course instruction with map and compass|
|1:00 -2:00 pm||Lunch ordered ahead at Bagels Plus and picked up on the way to hiking trail at Echo Lake State Park (or you can bring your own and store in our refrigerator). Participants will caravan from the Buttonwood Inn to Bagels Plus to the final destination of the hiking trail.|
|2:00 - 5:30 pm||In field instruction on the hiking trail using the map and compass|
