Autumn is finally upon us; the leaves are changing shades, the crisp, cool air is setting in, and North Conway is transforming into a vibrantly colorful and scenic destination. Whether you’re a local, a traveler just passing through, or a guest at one of the area’s finest bed and breakfasts, there’s no shortage of things to enjoy during the fall season. Here are five of our favorite harvest season activities that we think you should check out during your upcoming stay!
Fryeburg Fair
Hosted during the first week of October and just a short drive from North Conway, the Fryeburg Fair is Maine’s largest agricultural fair and a true staple of the fall season. It features thrilling rides, tasty fair food, animal exhibits, and of course, plenty of live entertainment and other exciting draws. It even hosts a few different competitions, including harness racing and traditional skillet tossing. If you and your family don’t mind crowds, it’s an absolutely exhilarating time!
Conway Scenic Railroad Pumpkin Patch Express
The Conway Scenic Railroad is one of the top North Conway attractions year-round, but it delivers a quintessential fall experience during October. Each weekend throughout the month, this family-friendly train ride offers stunning views of the autumn foliage as it winds through the White Mountains. The trip includes a stop at a local pumpkin patch, too, where children can pick out their perfect pumpkin to take home just in time for Halloween!
Return of the Pumpkin People
One of Mount Washington Valley’s most cherished fall traditions is the Return of the Pumpkin People, which is a self-guided tour of creative and whimsical pumpkin displays scattered around North Conway, Jackson, and Bartlett. Businesses and residents alike participate, using pumpkin art to showcase scenes ranging from pop culture and television references to intricately detailed autumn-themed setups. Perfect for a family outing or unique photo opportunity, don’t hesitate to take your loved ones out to enjoy some of the local creativity!
Monster Mash Haunted Attraction
Monster Mash is a year-round indoor haunted walkthrough adventure (NOT an escape room), but the autumn season is arguably the best time of year to check it out. Prepare to be spooked and scared as you and your friends and family explore a fictional haunted estate and unravel all its spine-tingling mysteries.
Scenic Drives and Hikes
If you’d rather make the most of your time in North Conway by sticking to your own schedule, no trip to the area is complete without taking in the stunning fall foliage. Whether you choose to drive down the scenic Kancamagus Highway or hike up one of the area’s premier trails like Cathedral Ledge or Diana’s Baths, you’re sure to be impressed by the endless shades of orange, gold, and crimson. It’s also worth mentioning that these colors truly look their best during the sunrise and sunset, so plan accordingly!
