The Origins of North Conway

North Conway’s history is deeply intertwined with the development of New England. The area was first settled in the late 18th century, with the village itself being established in 1765 and named after Henry Seymour Conway. Due to its strategic location along key transportation routes, the town quickly became a hub for commerce and trade. With the arrival of the railroad in the mid-19th century, North Conway transformed into a popular destination for tourists, travelers, artists, and all else seeking the rejuvenating air of the White Mountains.

Conway Scenic Railroad

The Conway Scenic Railroad is perhaps the most iconic historical landmark in all of North Conway. Established in 1872, this railroad played a crucial role in the town’s development as a tourist attraction – after all, people needed a way to get here! Today, visitors can experience the charm of a bygone era by taking a ride on a restored vintage train.

Echo Lake State Park

Located just a few miles from the all-great tax-free shopping center in North Conway you’ll find Echo Lake State Park. It’s a great place to go if you have your kids with you, since you can take them swimming, hiking, or for a picnic, and the beautiful trail around the lake has all kinds of scenic views worth taking in. You can also easily see Cathedral Ledge towering over the lake – it’s kind of hard to miss!

Cranmore Mountain Resort

Founded in 1937 with a single rope row, the Cranmore Mountain Resort has come a long way since local businessman Harvey Gibson got things started. This year Mountain Adventure Park offers all kinds of fun for the whole family, whether you’re a fan of skiing or not. That said, if you do want to hit the slopes, you have 170 acres to enjoy. During the summer months, you can hike or check out some of their exciting ziplines.

Mount Washington Observatory Weather Discovery Center

Located right in the heart of North Conway Village, this center offers an interactive exploration of the science and history of weather forecasting. The center’s exhibits focus on the unique weather conditions of Mount Washington, known for having some pretty crazy weather at times! Visitors can learn about the history of the observatory while here, including its origins dating back to 1932, as well as its important role in weather research.
