Eco-Friendly Buttonwood Inn on Mt Surprise – North Conway, NH

Take Care of the Earth While We Take Care of You

In 2008, The Buttonwood Inn on Mt Surprise became certified by the New Hampshire Sustainable Lodging & Restaurant Program. Our goal is to provide you, our guest, with the best service, hospitality, and attention to detail possible, all while preserving the natural beauty and healthy environment of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We hope that you will also join us for your benefit and that of future generations. Note that we continue to add more eco-friendly measures to reduce our carbon footprint on the Earth.

Here are some of the “green” initiatives we’ve implemented so far:

  • Recycle all bottles, cans, plastic, and paper
  • Use recycled paper when necessary
  • Print double-sided
  • Email documents as much as possible to reduce paper usage
  • LED night lights and decorative lights
  • Energy-efficient fluorescent light bulbs
  • Outdoor solar LED lighting on the porches, back door area, and gardens
  • Automatic timer on outside light-turned off when The Inn is empty
  • Ask guests to turn off lights, air conditioning, and fans when they leave their rooms
  • Turn off hot water, heat, and air conditioning in unoccupied guest room areas
  • Buy local produce, meats, maple syrup, and more to reduce dependence on long haul trucking
  • Propagate and grow native New Hampshire plants that require less watering and fertilizer
  • Provide our delicious deep-well water in a decanter instead of bottled water (required to be tested by New Hampshire every year)
  • Use China, glassware, and cloth napkins
  • Decrease water usage with low-flow showerheads and faucets
  • Three-chamber body wash/shampoo/conditioner dispensers installed in bathroom showers using organic products, eliminating small bottle waste
  • Guest voluntary towel reuse
  • Use environmentally safe, non-chemical household cleaners that also disinfect bathrooms
  • Reuse old towels and linens as cleaning cloths
  • Heat the common rooms during the cold months with our wood-burning fireplace to rely less on oil heat
  • Added more insulation to walls and ceilings to minimize heat loss
  • Replace old appliances with new, high energy-efficient models
  • Refurbish or donate old furniture
